The six-week PhytoRX program teaches participants to utilize nutritious food as a form of disease treatment.
The ultimate objective is to minimize or eliminate medications gradually as a healthy diet decreases inflammation and disease markers.
The participants in this cohort were Spanish-speaking patients referred by HealthReach Clinic, offering free medical care and medications to uninsured Iredell County residents. The program materials were translated into Spanish to assist their learning.
Eight participants in the program received a cookbook, Food Lion gift card, and a bag of fresh fruits and vegetables during their final meeting.
They expressed satisfaction with the program, asked questions, and shared successes before enjoying a delightful lunch at FeedNC's Donoghue's Open Door cafe.
The PhytoRx program, which began in 2020, has had three participant groups so far. It is funded through a grant received by HealthReach, and FeedNC provides all the food for the program.
