Explosions and massive fire in First Hill's encampment near Harborview Medical Center and I-5 create a column of smoke and flames.
Multiple Seattle Fire units respond to significant encampment fire near 7th and James on the west side of Harborview, reported before 5:30 AM.
Firefighters faced multiple explosions while assessing the greenbelt area above the freeway with burning trees and camp areas. The fire was controlled in around 15 minutes.
SFD confirmed the fire spread to trees, tarps, and tents but did not reach Harborview Medical Center.
We have reached out to Seattle Fire for injury updates and will provide further information as soon as available.
SFD reports one injured person in the fire, but firefighters couldn't find them. The individual had walked to Harborview for treatment, as per SFD.
