Giolito is the new pitcher for the Angels

Angels acquire Giolito and López from White Sox, bolstering their pitching staff. Seeking playoff success with uncertain futures of Ohtani and Trout, who is yet to win in the postseason. Aiming to end their playoff drought since 2014.

Giolito and López are traded together for the second time. In 2016, Nats sent both pitchers, along with Dane Dunning, to the White Sox in exchange for outfielder Adam Eaton.

Giolito, 29, excelled in AL Cy Young voting from 2019-2021. Pitched a no-hitter against the Pirates in 2020. After struggling in 2022, he made an impressive comeback in 2023 with a 3.79 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 21 games. Allowed two runs or less in seven of his last nine starts.

Angels seek to bolster rotation and bullpen. Only Ohtani stands out; other starters have high ERAs. López could be the solution after recent recovery with a 1.75 ERA since May.

Trade is a homecoming for Giolito, former Harvard-Westlake star. He can't receive a qualifying offer from the Angels in free agency, and there's no draft compensation if he signs with another team.

Angels trade away two top prospects. Quero, a young talent, shined in lower leagues with impressive performance in Single-A Inland Empire and is still adjusting to Double-A.

Bush, White Sox's 5th prospect, left-handed with promising 2022 ERA. Selected in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft. Solid and diverse pitches.
